ACTIVITIES IN NORTH CYPRUS
With over 300 restaurants and taverns visitors are spoilt for choice. The local Cypriot food is rich and varied being heavily influenced by Lebanese, Syrian, Greek, and above all Turkish culinary art. In addition to the local food there are very many excellent restaurants specialising in European and other international cuisine, and eating out is relatively inexpensive. Northern Cyprus offers just two seasons, Spring begins in November and Summer starts in May. It is truly an island of contrasts. In the north a stony and rocky coastline is interspersed with quiet intimate beaches, and to theist there are vast expanses of dunes and sandy beaches. Inland from the north coast is the fertile coastal plain where olives, carob, citrus fruit and grapes are grown, rising steeply to the conifer forested upper slopes and the rugged skyline of the Kyrenia mountains. Northern Cyprus is a haven of natural beauty. From the unspoilt unpolluted coastline across the central plain stretching between Famagusta and Nicosia, into the magnificent Kyrenia mountain range. With the first substantial rains in November spring awakes to produce ariot of colour with anemones.

Bird Watching Tours
It is possible to watch 347 different species of bird in Cyprus. However, only 46 of these are native of Cyprus, and 7 of these are the endemic sub-species (that is only found in Cyprus). 119 out of the 347 birds that can be observed on the island are of winter-migrant breeder type, and 90 of these migrate to Cyprus regularly every Bird watching North Cypruswinter-time. 29 of these winter-migrants migrate to the island less regularly than others. Together with the native Cypriot birds 27 of them migrate to Cyprus for breeding purposes. Apart from these, there are 220 other species of birds that use Cyprus as transit while migrating to other lands. 200 of these 220 species regularly pass as transit from Cyprus during their migration season. These are mostly the birds breeding in Europe, and migrating to Middle East and Africa. There are also birds that occasionally come to Cyprus by mistake, when they lose their groups, or their ways. There have so far 51 of this latter type recorded. Cyprus is on a north-south migration route and there are many birds in transit, some in vast flocks, some in small clusters. These migrating birds may only rest for a few days to a week. March to May is the period of north-ward migration and August to October the southward.

First institutionalised attempts at the protection of the birds in Northern Cyprus started in 1989, with the foundation of the North Cyprus Society for the Protection of Birds, NCSPB (or KUSKOR). The association works in close co-operation with other environmentalist association, especially the local North Cyprus- Greenpeace Movement for the protection of the natural beauties, the wild animals, and the endemic birds of Cyprus. NCSPB stages public educational programmes throughout the year in village coffee shops, hunting clubs, sports clubs, and schools. These programmes, consisting mainly of introduction of birds and their environment, last year (1994) alone presented to more than 800 people in over 40 villages, which pleased both the people who listened to the casual chats and the NCSPB. The results achieved out of these programmes were important because most of the listeners were hunters.

Notices of everything noteworthy from funerals to beach barbeques are pinned to this notice board in the forecourt of Girne Post Office in North Cyprus; messages are left here and rumour vibrations emanate from the bark.

The BRS (British Residents Society) organises social events during the year, open to both members and non-members, and provides a comprehensive telephone list, which is updated every six months. Their website is www.brstrnc.com.

The British ResidentsSociety organise a Blood Donor Day at North Cyprus Girne Hospital every six months (April and October). Blood is collected by the TRNC blood bank and personal Blood Donor Cards are given to donors, which record both blood group and units donated. As a donor, you do not have to find a blood donor for yourself and family in the event of an emergency. The Blood Donor dates are published in North Cyprus Today.

The Northern Cyprus Anglo-Turkish Association is a non-political Association that arranges activities to promote understanding and respect for English and/or Turkish speaking people.

The Kyrenia Society in TRNC runs a lending library, which is open every Saturday and Wednesday morning, in the building behind the Post Office in Kyrenia. Temporary membership is available for holiday-makers.
